William R. Forstchen is a Professor of History and Faculty Fellow at Montreat College, in Montreat, North Carolina. He received his doctorate from Purdue University with specializations in Military History, the American Civil War and the History of Technology. His current book, One Second After was cited on the floor of Congress and before the House Armed Services Committee by Congressman Roscoe Bartlett (R.-MD), chair of the House Committee tasked to evaluate EMP weapons, as a realistic portrayal of the potential damage rendered by an EMP attack on the continental United States.
Interview on 5-4-2010 regarding real life EMP & Solar Flare threats and how this can affect our lives.
A simple thing called a “Faraday Cage” is nearly a fool proof protector of electronics from an EMP. You can find the plans on line and purchase the material to make one for just a few dollars from any hardware store. A metal box, metal shipping container, metal 10x12 ft. trailer, well grounded.
If you then buy a couple of simple hand held two way radios, plus a good short wave radio and place them inside the Faraday Cage (make sure they rest on a non conductive surface such as a ceramic bowl) they will survive even the worst EMP hit. In your family survival kit be certain you have plenty of batteries to support them since you might be relying on these things for months. You now have communications with your family, or neighbors and news from the outside world.
Have an emergency generator
Don’t plug it in to your home because the “surge” will blow it out. Instead, disassemble any delicate components and put them in the Faraday cage. If a regular emergency such as power failure due to a storm happens, you can always pull them out, reinstall and you’ll have power anyhow. In the event of an EMP, that generator might be a life saver.Consider fuel options & long term supplies, in the event of an EMP this could be very crucial.
Suggestions: straight vegetable oil conversion for diesel, most vegie oils will burn like diesel if heated (200-250 average) run vegetable (peanut oil), cut motor, transmission oil, etc.
Gasoline engines will run on 190 proof alcohol (see ethanol page)cat tails, waste sugars, sugar crops, grains can produce alcohol & still feed you livestock without loss.
Gasifier wood waste can run a generator or any gas engine.
More on this soon.
Vehicle
When I worked on military vehicles (85-90 Army Mechanic) they were mechanical injection pumps & operation, as long as they running before an EMP (diesel) or shut off & grounded before (gas), then we were good to go! Because they didn’t have delicate electronics like today’s electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems on our diesel & gasoline vehicles.
The other issue would be starter solenoid (on all the vehicles) & ignition coil on the gas motors to include generators, that could be a problem in the event of an EMP.

NukAlert key chain detectors,
just in case some idiot does do something ugly (dirty bomb, etc.), this is the sure way to detect it. I believe that anyone that can afford one? Should! And if you do detect anything worth while? This could assist authorities. Nuclear counter measure books, "Potassium Iodide" radiation counter measure, civil defense & more.
