Wind Generator

A wind turbine is a rotating machine which converts the kinetic energy in wind into mechanical energy.

If the mechanical energy is used directly by machinery, such as a pump or grinding stones, the machine is usually called a windmill.

If the mechanical energy is then converted to electricity, the machine is called a wind generator, wind turbine, wind power unit (WPU), wind energy converter (WEC), or aerogenerator.

History of Wind Power & More!!!

Wind turbines require locations with constantly high wind speeds. With a Wind Resource Assessment it is possible to estimate the amount of energy the wind turbine will produce.

A yardstick frequently used to determine good locations is referred to as Wind Power Density (WPD.) It is a calculation relating to the effective force of the wind at a particular location, frequently expressed in terms of the elevation above ground level over a period of time. It takes into account wind velocity and mass.

Arch Miller, Chairman and Founder of Northwest Renewable Energy Institute (NW-REI), a division of International Air & Hospitality Academy, says there is a huge demand for trained wind turbine technicians. NW-REI started classes for a 6 month course to train wind turbine technicians in July 2009. New classes begin monthly with a capacity of 40 students. NW-REI graduated 107 students in their first 3 classes and 98 have either obtained a job or are waiting for a start date from previous interviews. Fast growth in the wind industry is expected to continue for the next 10 to 15 years.

Providing just over 1.5% of US electricity today, Wind farms in 38 states, Supporting about 85,000 U.S. jobs (March '09), projected 35,000 more U.S. wind jobs in 2010
